The two main times we are looking for volunteers at the Marsh are in the spring for the songbird banding and in the fall for more migration monitoring of song birds and for help with our owl banding projects. There are many levels of engagement by volunteers. Sometimes we need help for very simple tasks, such as helping hold bird bags or replacing rotting boards on our walkways, right up to helping remove birds and owls from the nets. Owls are very tricky and you should not expect to be allowed to attemp this without a season of songbird banding under your belt.

On a starry night you hear the sounds of wildlife all around us. We are calm and in a deep state of peace. We absorb as much of this beauty as possible. Sitting beside the marsh the hoot of an owl catches our attention in the near distance. We begin to feel a slight sense of isolation. That is, until we look over towards a nearby shed. By the glow of a lantern we see a man lighting up a woodstove. He has just returned from setting up seven owl nets. Our curiosity leads us to introduce ourselves, and so begins our friendship with Jimmy Jones, a huge contributor to the Hilliardton Marsh.

The Hilliardton Marsh web development team consists of volunteer designers, administrators and managers who, together with a network of dedicated community members, have taken this site to a high standard in its relatively short life. The Hilliardton Marsh has some wonderfully talented people taking new approaches to outdoor education, and taking proven ideas from elsewhere and adapting them to local needs and circumstances. The web site should be a reflection of this energy and talent.
