One of the stated goals of the Hilliardton Marsh Bird and Wetland Research and Education Center (HMBWREC) is to promote and attract potential research about birds or wetlands. If you are a graduate student or know of someone who is looking for a potential place to conduct research, the Marsh has a lot to offer.

Perhaps the biggest drawing card for potential graduate student research is the fact that we are on the southern edge of the boreal forest, where we could anticipate seeing global warming impacts first.  The Marsh is located approximately 5 hours of driving time north of Toronto, eliminating the necessity of expensive flights to the boreal forest. The town of Temiskaming Shores (formerly known as NewLiskeard) is 15 minutes from the Marsh.  We are currently adding infrastructure at the Marsh, which includes a new banding shed and one small sleep shed that could be available for researchers to stay at for a nominal fee. Past TERRA students who have an interest and a working knowledge of the Marsh are available to be hired to help graduate students with their research.

Another advantage is that we have a database of birds that we have banded dating back to 1996. This data has been accumulated through consistent mist netting effort each spring.  As well, we have a checklist of birds seen at the Marsh which is updated as new species are seen and as  more information regarding abundance is determined.

The Marsh itself lends itself to relative ease of research as both the wetland and upland habitat is very accessible to researchers. For more information please contact us. We would be happy to see how we can help you get your feet wet.
