The Hilliardton Marsh contains a wide diversity of plants and animals, some of which are regularly found nowhere else in Timiskaming District.  Knowing how the habitats and denizens of the marsh fit into the wider context of the general region of Timiskaming is one way to appreciate how special the marsh really is.  The Hilliardton Marsh has been classified as a provincially significant wetland, so even in the context of the province of Ontario, it is considered a fairly special place!
